HL Deb 15 July 2003 vol 651 c99WA
Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they and the Commonwealth Secretariat are in touch with the government of Uganda concerning the restoration of order in the northern and north-east regions of that country. [HL3702]

The Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (Baroness Symons of Vernham Dean)

We are deeply concerned about the deteriorating situation in the north and north-east regions of Uganda, especially following the recent escalation of violence by the Lord's Resistance Army rebel group. We continue to raise this issue with the Government of Uganda at official and ministerial level. Our High Commission in Kampala is in regular dialogue with the Ugandan President, Yoweri Museveni, about the conflict.

Such contacts as the Commonwealth Secretariat may have had with the Government of Uganda on this issue are a matter for the Secretariat.
