To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what plans the Government has to introduce an alternative to the 11 + examinations. [123716]

I have established a Working Group to provide advice and recommendations on options for future arrangements for post-primary education, including the development of alternative transfer arrangements.

The group has been asked to report by 31 October 2003. Decisions on future transfer procedures will not be taken until the group's advice has been considered.
