To ask the Secretary of State for Health pursuant to the answer of 10 December 2002 ref: 83330, how much his Department spent on educating the public about prevention and awareness of turberculosis in each year since 1997; and what form this year's Awareness campaign took. [87577]

Approximately £43,000 was spent annually on tuberculosis awareness campaigns between 1997–98 and 2000–01.

In 2001–02, £309,178 was spent on a campaign which incorporated press, television and radio advertising as well as the distribution of leaflets and posters throughout England in English, Gujarati, Hindi, Bengali, Punjabi, Urdu, Somali and Russian. £80,821 has been spent so far in 2002–03 in support of this campaign.
