During the period 1992–2001 there has been a steady downward trend in the number of people killed and seriously injured on our roads. This has been achieved despite an increase in road traffic (including pedal cycles) since 1992 of 15 per cent.

Manchester Police, we have made use of variable message signing which is currently being used to good effect by encouraging drivers to slow down and take extra care in wet conditions. Investigations are currently in hand to identify causes of the surface water problems and I will write to you again when we have a clearer picture.
