To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether the Government supports the Franco-German proposals for the President of the European Commission to be elected by the European Parliament; and if he will make a statement.[93621]

The Government welcomes the French and German joint contribution to the Convention on the Future of Europe. We are studying their proposal for the President of the European Commission to be elected by the European Parliament and I am holding consultations with other EU partners on what is, at this stage, merely one of many proposals put to the convention.
