HC Deb 22 January 2003 vol 398 c410W
Mr. Paul Marsden

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will list for each year since 1997 the death rates from sudden infant death syndrome for babies born into families in the manual social classes. [91984]

Ruth Kelly

The information requested falls within the responsibility of the National Statistician. I have asked him to reply.

Letter from Len Cook to Mr. Paul Marsden, dated 22 January 2003: As National Statistician, I have been asked to reply to your recent question asking to list each year since 1997 the death rates from sudden infant death syndrome for babies born into families in the manual social classes. (91984) The table below provides sudden infant death rates by social class based on father's occupation in England and Wales for the years 1997–2001. Recording of occupation on births and deaths where the birth was registered solely by the mother is incomplete. For this reason, sudden infant death rates by social class are shown excluding sole registered births. The death rates for solely registered births are shown separately. Occupation at death was used to derive numbers of deaths by social class in this table, as only a 10 per cent. sample of birth registrations are coded to an occupation.
