Dr. Cable

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how many laptop computers were used by(a) Ministers and special advisers and (b) officials in his Department in each year since 1995; how many were (i) lost and (ii) stolen; what their cost was; and if he will make a statement. [98707]

Mr. Jamieson

The information requested on the use of laptop computers in each year since 1995 is not available centrally or in the form requested, and could be provided only at disproportionate cost.

Since the establishment of the Department for Transport on 29 May 2002, there has been one reported case of a lost laptop computer, at a cost of £1,011. For the figures of the Department's predecessors, I refer the hon. Member to the answer given by my hon. Friend the Member for Southampton, Test (Dr. Whitehead) on 29 January 2002, Official Report, Volume 379, columns 182–84W, to the right hon. and learned Member for North-East Fife (Mr. Campbell).
