HL Deb 18 December 2003 vol 655 cc186-7WA
The Countess of Mar

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they have made any assessment of the conclusions of the paper Very-low carbohydrate weight-loss diets revisited by Jeff S. Volek and Eric C. Westman (Cleveland Journal of Medicine, November 2002) and it simplications for public policy on diet and nutrition. [HL402]

Lord Warner

We are aware of the conclusions reached in this paper that further research work is needed before conclusions can be reached about the long-term safety and efficacy of very-low carbohydrate weight loss diets. Government advice based on current scientific and medical opinion remains that the population should consume a balanced diet which is rich in carbohydrates and low in saturated fat.

The Countess of Mar

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they are monitoring the current work of the Government of the United States in reviewing its "food pyramid", with specific reference to the role of high carbohydrate intakes as a cause of obesity. [HL403]

Lord Warner

The Food Standards Agency is in touch with the American authorities on their work in this area.
