Mr. Rosindell:

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer how much the Government have budgeted to spend on (a) the reconstruction of Iraq and (b) education in the United Kingdom in 2004. [143545]

Mr. Boateng:

The information is as follows: (a) At the International Donor's Conference in Madrid in October, the UK Government committed a total of £544 million to support the reconstruction of Iraq over the three years from April 2003. Of this, £296 million will be for the next two financial years, 2004–05 and 2005–06, including bilateral funds and the UK's share of the proposed EU contribution in Iraq. (b) Education expenditure in the UK over a very similar period is forecast to be £190 billion (consisting of £58.6 billion in 2003–04, £62.9 billion in 2004–05 and £68.5 billion in 2005–06).
