Mr. Foulkes:

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Skills what proportion of pupils are in (a) private and independent and (b) state schools. [140560]

Mr. Miliband:

As at January 2003, there were almost 8.4 million pupils across all schools in England. Of these pupils, some 7.0 per cent. were in independent schools, 92.7 per cent. were in maintained schools' and 0.3 per cent. were in other schools2
