Lord Laird

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What percentage of the budget for Waterways Ireland was provided by the Government of the Irish Republic in the years 2000, 2001 and 2002. [HL2111]

Lord Williams of Mostyn

The percentage of the budget for Waterways Ireland provided by the Government of the Irish Republic in the years 2000, 2001 and 2002 is as follows:

  • 2000: 90 per cent
  • 2001:88 per cent
  • 2002: 83 per cent

Waterways Ireland is financed on the basis that current expenditure is divided between jurisdictions on the basis of 85 per cent from the south and 15 per cent from the north, reflecting the proportional length of the waterway network in each jurisdiction, while capital/development expenditure is funded totally by the jurisdiction in which it is incurred.
