To ask the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions what estimate he has made of the number of children in poverty in(a) Haltemprice and Howden and (b) the East Riding of Yorkshire in each year since 1997. [96709]

Malcolm Wicks

Poverty is a complex and multidimensional problem that affects many aspects of people's lives. We published "Opportunity for all—Fourth Annual Report" (CM 5598) in September 2002, which contains information on a range of indicators of poverty for children and young people. Unfortunately, not all indicators can be broken down to the constituency level due to sample size limitations.

We expect to publish the preliminary conclusions of our consultation on Measuring Child Poverty in spring 2003.
