HC Deb 19 September 2002 vol 390 cc283-4W
Dr. Cable

To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs how much her Department spent on information literature, advertising and campaign material in financial year 2001–02; if she will list the campaigns that spent over £250,000; and if she will make a statement. [70204]

Mr. Morley

[holding answer 22 July 2002]: DEFRA was established during the 1st quarter of financial year 2001–02. The Department's centralised publicity expenditure is not recorded in the format requested. Our records show a total expenditure for publicity of £6,640,161.00 as at 31 March 2002.

Due to the effects of the Foot and Mouth Disease outbreak last year, customary publicity and exhibitions activities were deferred or cancelled. DEFRA centralised publicity activities focused on poster campaigns, events, shows and direct information literature mailings.

The "Your Countryside You're Welcome" campaign was the only one for which expenditure exceeded £250,000.
