To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Skills what her estimate is of the number of local education authorities where performance has been found to be unsatisfactory; if she will list these authorities; and if she will make a statement. [75257]

Mr. Miliband

[holding answer 24 October 2002]: Since Ofsted began its statutory inspection of local education authorities in 1998, 42 authorities have been found to be unsatisfactory. These are listed. Of the 27 LEAs that have been re-inspected at least once so far, and the findings published, Ofsted found that 26 had improved, and of these 21 were satisfactory.
