HC Deb 24 October 2002 vol 391 c499W
Mr. Rosindell

To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will make a statement on the funding available for medical related degrees. [75094]

Mr. Hutton

The service increment for teaching reimburses National Health Service organisations the additional costs they incur as result of providing a clinical setting for medical and dental undergraduate students' training. £585 million was made available for this in 2002–03 and included additional funds to support increased numbers of medical and dental students. Between 1999 and 2001 the higher education funding council (HEFCE) allocated 57 per cent. more medical school places to higher education institutions in England. Actual training costs are met by HEFCE, which is a matter for my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Education and Skills.
