Letter from Len Cook to Mrs. Irene Adams, dated 15 July 2002:
600WAs National Statistician, I have been asked to reply to your Parliamentary Question about employment and unemployment in Scotland. (73671)The Office for National Statistics (ONS) compiles statistics for employment and unemployment from the Labour Force Survey (LFS) following the internationally standard International Labour Organisation (ILO) definitions. For parliamentary constituencies, the LFS provides estimates of employment and unemployment rates, but not levels. However, the survey sample size is too small to provide reliable estimates of unemployment for Renfrewshire Unitary Authority or Paisley North constituency. The ONS also compiles statistics of claimants of unemployment-related benefits. The claimant count consists of all people claiming Jobseeker's Allowance or National Insurance credits at Employment Service local offices. They must declare that they are out of work, capable of, available for and actively seeking work during the week in which the claim is made. The attached tables give information from the LFS and claimant count. Labour market statistics are published in the monthly Labour Market Statistics First Release and on the Nomis ® database, both of which are available in the House of Commons library.
