HC Deb 28 November 2002 vol 395 c391W
20. Tim Loughton

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Skills what advice he has given schools in order to accommodate the particular needs of young carers, while at the same time, pursuing their careers at schools. [81986]

Mr. Stephen Twigg

Advice on how to support young carers at school has been provided to schools in DfES circular 10/99.

It recommends that schools: adopt flexible strategies to address the young carers' needs e.g. approve absence when needed and set work to avoid gaps in education; work with statutory and voluntary agencies to identify specific problems and offer solutions; and designate a member of staff to take responsibility for young carers.
