To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what estimates his Department has made of the value of voluntary sector work to the economy in each year since 1997. [80409]

The contribution of general charities to GDP was £4.5 billion in 1997;£4.7 billion in 1998;£5.0 billion in 1999;£5.3 billion in 2000;and £5.8 billion in 2001.

The contribution of non-profit institutions serving households (NPISH) to GDP was £19.6 billion in 1997;£21.1 billion in 1998;£22.2 billion in 1999; £23.0 billion in 2000;and £24.3 billion in 2001.

Neither set of estimates takes into account the value of unpaid work to general charities.
