HC Deb 20 November 2002 vol 394 cc166-7W
Norman Baker

To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs what steps she takes to ensure each batch of sewage sludge spread on agricultural land is not unacceptably contaminated by heavy metals. [80842]

Mr. Morley

The Sludge (Use in Agriculture) Regulations 1989 (SI 1263), as amended in 1990 (SI 880), impose controls on the application of sewage sludge to agricultural land, including statutory limits on the amount of heavy metals that can be added to the soil and on the concentration of heavy metals in the soil after application. The regulations, which are enforced by the Environment Agency, require regular testing and analysis of sewage sludge before it is applied.
