To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how much his Department has made available through the Home Zones Scheme Capital Modernisation Fund since 2000; and how much has been (a) applied for and (b) spent in rural areas in (i) 2000–01, (ii) 2001–02 and (iii) 2002–03 to date. [78399]

[holding answer 31 October 2002]: The Department has made £30 million available through the Capital Modernisation Fund for Home Zones Challenge projects. The funding covers a three year period from 2002–03. Successful projects were announced on 11 January 2002. The Home Zones Challenge is specifically aimed at improving the design of streets in residential locations. There were no applications from rural areas.
