HC Deb 10 May 2002 vol 385 c396W
Mr. Cox

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many pensioners living in England and Wales are paying income tax on their incomes. [53878]

Dawn Primarolo

It is estimated that 4.5 million, out of 10.8 million, pensioners in the UK paid income tax on their incomes in 2001–02.

Pensioners are defined as women aged 60 and over and men aged 65 and over. The figures are based upon the Survey of Personal Incomes and are consistent with the 2002 Budget.
