HC Deb 01 May 2002 vol 384 cc887-8W
Mr. Jim Cunningham

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many UK citizens emigrated in each of the last five years. [53136]

Ruth Kelly

The information requested falls within the responsibility of the National Statistician. I have asked him to reply.

Letter from Len Cook to Mr. Jim Cunningham, dated 30 April 2002: As National Statistician I have been asked to reply to your question on emigration of UK citizens. (53136) The British Nationality Act 1981, which came into force on 1' January 1983, replaced citizenship of the United Kingdom and Colonies, with British citizenship, British Overseas citizenship, and British Dependent Territories citizenship. Therefore, the attached table shows outward international migration by British citizens during the last five years from 1996 to 2000.

Total international migration: British citizens emigrating 1996 to 2000, United Kingdom
thousands
British citizens
1996 142.8
1997 134.5
1998 114.6
1999 126.5
2000 152.3

>Note:

Figures in these tables represent total international migration combining data from the International Passenger Survey, Home Office data on asylum seekers, and people who entered the UK as short-term visitors but were subsequently granted an extension of stay for a year or longer for other reasons, and estimates of migration between the UK and the Irish Republic.
