§ Clare ShortIn 2000–01, the last complete financial year, my Department spent £1.4 billion on bilateral development assistance in 167 countries and £1.3 billion through our donations to multilateral development agencies. In 2001–02 bilateral spending is estimated to rise to £1.65 billion in a similar number of countries while our contribution to multilateral development agencies is projected to increase to £1.4 billion.
