To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if Her Majesty's Government are investigating(a) privacy-enhancing technologies and (b) secret-key certificates in its work on developing entitlement cards. [40864]

[holding answer 7 March 2002]: My officials have engaged in wide discussion in their work on entitlement cards. In particular, they have worked closely with the Office of the e-Envoy where relevant work on privacy enhancing technologies and secret-key certificates is being undertaken in the context of the development of electronic Government services.
