To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many consultant vacancies there were by specialty in(a) 1997 and (b) 2001. [41716]

3. Mr. Hutton

The NHS vacancy survey has been conducted in March each year since 1999 and information is not available for 1997. Information for 2001 is shown in the table.

3 Excludes staff working within HA
