HC Deb 18 March 2002 vol 382 c75W
Mr. Pickthall

To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what evidence she has collated on the relaxation of specification standards for the benefit of some importers. [36831]

Ms Hewitt

Most standards are developed under a voluntary process facilitated by the British Standards Institution (BSI) and the content of such standards are determined by business, consumers and other stakeholders. BSI itself is independent of Government, and questions about standards for particular products need to be taken up with BSI rather than my Department.

Records are not kept by my Department of how such voluntary standards are used.
