HC Deb 18 March 2002 vol 382 c100W
Mrs. Curtis-Thomas

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Skills what assessment she has made of the reasons for the change in acceptances of United Kingdom students to further education engineering courses over the past 10 years. [39529]

Margaret Hodge

[holding answer 4 March 2002]: Although there has been a decrease over the past 10 years in total acceptances to engineering courses, those for production engineering, for example, have been broadly maintained, and those for aeronautical engineering courses have increased. This reflects the pace of technological change. The Government have commissioned Sir Gareth Roberts to review the supply of high level science and engineering skills. A report is expected soon.
