To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, Local Government and the Regions what proportion of the employees in his Department are represented by a trade union. [40098]

[holding answer 4 March 2002]: The Department does not hold records on the proportion of its staff represented by trade unions. However, the Department considers effective consultation and involvement of staff important. It is a personal decision whether or not to join a trade union; but the Department encourages staff to join an appropriate trade union and to play an active part within it, making sure their views are represented.
