To ask the Parliamentary Secretary, Lord Chancellor's Department if he will change the level of bereavement damages awarded under section 1 A of the Fatal Accidents Act 1976 and Article 3A(5) of the Fatal Accidents (Northern Ireland) Order 1977. [43087]

Mr. Wills

The Lord Chancellor laid before Parliament yesterday orders increasing the level of bereavement damages from £7,500 to £10,000 to reflect the increase in inflation since the figure was last revised in 1991. The orders will take effect from 1 April 2002.
