HC Deb 24 June 2002 vol 387 c693W
Mr. Swayne

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what recent steps the Foreign and Commonwealth Office has taken to assist Mr. Ian Stillman in India. [62620]

Mr. Mike O'Brien

My right hon. Friend the Foreign Secretary raised Mr. Stillman's case with the Indian Home and Foreign Ministers on 29 May 2002 during his recent visit to India. He asked that Mr. Stillman's application for transfer to a prison in Chennai be considered favourably and quickly. He also raised our concern about a Supreme Court Judge's comments about the disabled, made in connection with Mr. Stillman's case, on 6 May 2002.

Our High Commission in New Delhi continues to do all it can to ensure that the Indian authorities are meeting Mr. Stillman's welfare requirements adequately.
