To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many overseas nursing applicants are awaiting admission to the UK nursing register; and if he will make a statement. [61156]

Mr. Hutton

There are currently 5,800 overseas applications awaiting a decision from the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) regarding entry to the UK nursing register. The NMC has a programme of action to clear these outstanding applications.
