HC Deb 23 July 2002 vol 389 cc967-8W
Mr. Salmond

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how many(a) fishing and (b) non-fishing harbours there are in each country and region of the UK. [72563]

Mr. Jamieson

The Department does not keep information on the exact overall numbers of harbours in the UK. There are 74 Fishery Harbours in England and 21 in Wales, listed in Schedule 4 to the Sea Fish Industry Act 1951. Responsibility for fishery harbours in Scotland is a devolved matter and related questions should therefore be addressed to the Scottish Parliament.

Mr. Salmond

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport on what basis he classes harbours as(a) fishing and (b) non-fishing. [72562]

Mr. Jamieson

Fishery Harbours in England and Wales are designated by virtue of being listed in Schedule 4 of the Sea Fish Industry Act 1951. There is no process of designating general harbours. Responsibility for harbour legislation in Scotland is a devolved matter and related questions should therefore be addressed to the Scottish Parliament.
