Mr. Heald

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many cardiologists are working in the NHS; and how many will be working in the NHS in 2002–03. [68273]

Mr. Hutton

There were 590 hospital consultants working within the cardiology specialty in England as at 31 March 2002. This represents an increase of 26 per cent. since 19991.
