§ Clare ShortThe Infrastructure and Urban Development department currently allocates a £3 million annual budget for specific sustainable livelihood projects in both rural and urban areas.
- 1998–99: No budget
- 1999–2000: £615,303
- 2000–01: £2,119,726
- 2001–02: £2,336,165
- 2002–03 (so far): £389,149.
It should be noted, however, that sustainable livelihoods is a flexible approach, applicable to many different contexts. Sustainable livelihoods approaches are therefore also incorporated into many other infrastructure projects including Water and Sanitation, Energy, ICT, Human Settlements and Engineering Knowledge and Research projects.

§ Clare ShortMy Department supports a number of important initiatives aimed at promoting various aspects of private sector participation in the provision of infrastructure and urban services, particularly to the poorer sections of the developing world's population.
These are primarily undertaken in association with other bilateral and multilateral development agencies. During the period in question the Department has contributed the following:
To the Private/Public Infrastructure Advisory Facility—£14.83 million.
To the Public/Private Partnership for the Urban Environment—£1.53 million.
To the Emerging Africa Infrastructure Fund—£26.72 million. Business Partners for Development—£1.72 million.
AID to various small activities—£1.70 million.
