To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what discussions she has had with British Energy and BNFL on the proposed Liabilities Management Authority. [65003]

[holding answer 27 June 2002]Since the announcement made by my hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry on 28 November 2001,Official Report, column 990, my officials have had discussions with both companies on a range of issues, including the setting up of the Liabilities Management Authority (LMA).

A White Paper on managing the nuclear legacy will be published shortly. This will set out the Government's proposals for the LMA as a body responsible to Government for ensuring that public sector civil nuclear liabilities are dealt with safely, securely, cost-effectively and in ways which protect the environment for the benefit of current and future generations.
