To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs what progress has been made by her Department on improving air quality since 1997. [29554]

Mr. Meacher

Good progress has been made since 1997 in improving urban air quality in the UK, although we still need to do more if we are to achieve all of the objectives in our Air Quality Strategy. The improvements are, in large part, the result of the actions we have taken to reduce emissions from road transport and industry.
