Mr. Don Foster

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, Local Government and the Regions how much money has been(a) provided in subsidies and (b) received in paybacks from each train operating company in each financial year since April 1995. [30348]

The annual reports of the Strategic Rail Authority (SRA) and, prior to 1999, the Office of Passenger Rail Franchising (OPRAF) provide detailed breakdowns of subsidy and performance regime payments by individual train operating companies.

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, Local Government and the Regions how much money received in paybacks from train operating companies in each financial year since April 1995 has been spent on the railways as(a) public resource expenditure, (b) public investment and (c) public expenditure supporting private investment. Income from receipts to the Strategic Rail Authority, and formerly to the Office of Passenger Rail Franchising, cannot be attributed to any specific expenditure by those bodies.
