The number of schools granted specialist status on the basis of their first application in each year since 1997 is shown in the table.

§ Mr. Timms[holding answer 23 January 2002]: There have been 48 joint applications for specialist school status since May 1997, of which 19 have been successful. A 105W further 12 joint applications have been received under the current competition which are currently being assessed. Two applications we would identify as 'associated applications' are being considered in the October 2001 competition, the results of which will be announced in February.
