To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the total amount of public expenditure per head of population in each of the constituent nations of the United Kingdom in each of the last four years. [27451]

Information on identifiable total managed public expenditure per head by country is given in Tables 8.2b to 8.6b of Public Expenditure Statistical Analyses 2001–02 (Cm 5101) published in April 2001.

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what percentage of the expenditure of local authority capital receipts in each of the last four years has counted as public expenditure; and what is the total amount of such expenditure. [27450]

Mr. Andrew Smith

All capital expenditure, net of all sales of capital assets, by local authorities counts as public expenditure as measured by Total Managed Expenditure (TME).

Gross capital expenditure (before netting off sale receipts) by local authorities is shown in table 6.8 of "Public Expenditure Statistical Analyses 2001–02, Cm5101". Receipts from the sale of capital assets are shown in table. 6.9.
