To ask the Secretary of State for Health how much the theft of medical drugs from NHS hospitals and GP surgeries by patients and staff has cost the NHS since 1997. [24307]

[holding answer 8 January 2002]: Only the total value and number of losses from national health service trusts, health authorities and primary care trusts, due to "Damage to property due to theft and fraud" is reported to the Department of Health. Information on the cost to the NHS of theft of medical drugs from NHS hospitals by patients and staff is not reported separately.

No information is collected about theft from general practitioners.
