Mr. Andrew Turner

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what grants are available to(a) local authorities and (b) private nursing and residential homes to assist in the provision of additional places in such homes; when the most recent invitations to bid for such grants were issued and to whom; what resources are available for such grants; when bids close and decisions will be made on bids; and if he will make a statement. [24948]

Jacqui Smith

We have recently announced that the resources which the Department is making available for social care will be increasing by 6.5 per cent. next year. Local councils will decide how to use these additional resources, most of which can be used for the provision of residential or nursing care. Resources are generally allocated to local councils by formulae rather than on a bidding basis. The Department does not make any grants direct to private sector homes.
