To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many prisoners are on release under the tagging system; and what the equivalent figures have been in each year since the introduction of the system. [24458]

As at midnight on 30 November 2001, a total of 1,786 prisoners were being monitored under the Home Detention Curfew scheme. The equivalent figures for 30 November 1999 and 30 November 2000 were 2,000 and 1,939 respectively. The scheme was introduced on 28 January 1999.
