To ask the Secretary of State for Health what plans he has to commission research into the incidence of dementia. [35083]

[holding answer 11 February 2002]: The Department of Health has a research programme underpinning the National Service Framework for Older People. Dementia will be one of the topics to be considered in the research attached to the NSF underpinning strategy.

Bids for policy-related research projects will be sought in the near future. The successful projects, and their research findings, will be included on the National Research Register www.doh.gov.uk/research when available.
