HL Deb 25 February 2002 vol 631 cc202-3WA
Baroness Ludford

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What their position is with regard to the draft waste from electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) directive; and what arrangements they envisage for its implementation and for meeting the cost of disposal. [HL2611]

Lord Sainsbury of Turville

The Government fully support the aims and objectives of the directive which should help us meet national goals set out in the waste strategies.

We are continuing to consult stakeholders to help develop options for implementation. Final implementation arrangements cannot be considered until the directive is finalised.

The current drafts of the directive state clearly that producers are to be responsible for the costs of disposal of equipment when it reaches the end of its life.
