The information requested falls within the responsibility of the National Statistician. I have asked him to reply.

Letter from Len Cook to Adam Price, dated 12 February 2002: As National Statistician I have been asked to reply to your recent question on estimating the proportion of Welsh Gross Domestic Product (GDP) as a percentage of the UK economy in 2001. (35625) The latest data available are for the year 1999, and were published as an ONS News Release on 27 February 2001. These data show that in 1999 Wales accounted for 4 per cent. of the UK GDP (excluding Extra-Regio—this comprises compensation of employees and gross operating surplus which cannot be assigned to regions). The ONS is currently compiling estimates for data up to the year 2000. We plan to publish these estimates later in the spring. The publication referred to in this answer is available in the House of Commons Library and on the ONS website at http://www.statistics.gov.uk/regionalaccounts.
