Mr. Keetch

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how much his Department has(a) spent on legal fees as a result of cases brought against his Department, (b) paid out in out of court settlements and (c) paid out in court-ordered compensation in each of the last 10 years; and if he will make a statement. [87923]

Dr. Moonie

The amount spent on legal fees as a result of cases brought against the Ministry of Defence is not recorded separately for the years in question and could be provided only at disproportionate cost.

The amounts paid in out of court settlements and in court-ordered payments are not recorded separately, but the total amounts paid in compensation and legal costs in both categories for the last five years were:

£ million
Financial year Amount Paid
