What is the average pay of firefighters in the United Kingdom, and (in sterling) in France, Germany and Holland. [HL375]

The information held centrally is as follows. The starting salary for whole-time firefighters in the basic rank is £16,941 rising to £17,727 after six months. For those over 18 the starting salary is £17,208 rising to £17,982 after six months. After four years the salary for a fully qualified firefighter increases to £21,531, rising to £22,491 after 15 years. These rates were effective from 7 November 2001. Firefighters in London receive a London weighting allowance of £3,739.

The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister does not hold information on the average rates of firefighters' pay in France, Germany and Holland.
