HC Deb 16 December 2002 vol 396 cc591-2W
Mr. Dodds

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Skills what the level of central Government funding for university research was for the current year in England per head of population. [86464]

Margaret Hodge

There are three sources of Government funding for higher education research in England: The Higher Education Funding Council for England, the Research Councils and Government Departments. The most recent year for which all these figures are available is for academic year 2000–01, when funding totalled £1.75 billion. Using the latest population estimates from the Office of National Statistics for 2001, at around 49,181,000, this is approximately £36 per head of population.
