HC Deb 09 December 2002 vol 396 c156W
Mr. Burstow

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many people in England and Wales are deaf in one ear. [86294]

Jacqui Smith

While the Department does not collect that information, the Institute of Hearing Research recently conducted a survey of ear, nose and throat conditions. This suggested that around 17 people in every 1,000 have moderate to severe hearing difficulty or no hearing at all in one ear, but no difficulty in the other ear.
