To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many special advisers there were in his Department; and what their salaries were in each of the last five years. [46942]

[holding answer 10 April 2002]: From 1997 to 2001 there were two special advisers in the Home Office.

In relation to special advisers since June 2001, I refer the hon Member to the answer given to the hon. Member for Beaconsfield (Mr. Grieve) on 23 October 2001, Official Report, column 211W.

With regard to the pay of special advisers, I refer the hon. Member to the answer given by my right hon. Friend the Prime Minister on 10 April, Official Report, column 11W.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many special advisers were employed by him(a) between 1 May and 31 December 1997 and (b) in each year from 1998 to 2001 inclusive; and what the total amount spent on special advisers by the Department was in each of those years. [41260]
